

The player's mate is immortal only while permadeath is toggled off. The only NPC entities who cannot be killed are adult grizzly bears, ravens, golden eagles and bald eagles. If it was a predator or a competitor, its carcass will not be edible. Edibility is determined by the animal's category - If it was prey, its carcass becomes edible as soon as the death animation ends. In the event of an NPC's death, they become a carcass as soon as their corpse comes to rest on the ground. Deceased elder wolves and ironwolves will no longer be playable after they have died, though they will remain viewable in the wolf carousel. Players who are elder wolves will eventually experience unique deaths the game determines as their fate after a certain amount of time, or the player can choose to die peacefully, allowing their wolf to die painlessly in its sleep. If a player finds themself in this situation, it is better to wait for the animal responsible for their cause of death to move on, or request assistance from other players in the session in moving the threats away from their own corpse to be able to revive. Note that predators/prey who have recently killed the player may still be nearby and can result in repeatedly killing the player immediately once they are "revived". Players who had recently "revived" from their comatose-like death state will be restored back to 10% health.

Once the timer's countdown concludes, the player is then free to revive and resume play. If the death occurred in multiplayer, the player will instead be incapacitated for at least 10 seconds. If the death occurred in single-player, the game ends and will thus prompt the player to either reload a previous save file or return to the main menu. In the event of a player's death, they will hear a brief death song, and will be greeted with a message stating that their wolf has died.
